Is your morning coffee bland and tasteless? Instead of being a coffee maker, does it feel like a caffeine dispenser to you? Prepare for your inner barista to be liberated because we are changing the game of your coffee. It’s time for you to learn how much potential is trapped inside your reliable coffee maker and make the most amazing drink that you have ever tasted.
No more already ground coffees; go for whole beans that are freshly roasted. Choose beans as if they were fine wines. Experiment with different origins such as Ethiopian or Colombian and roast levels — light, medium or dark to get what suits you best. In addition, grind them just before brewing for maximum fragrance and taste.
The right grind size acts as some clandestine signal between your beans and the coffee maker. If it is too fine, this will make your coffee bitter and over-extracted. If it is too coarse, it will be weak and watery. For most drip coffee makers, aim at a medium grind because this is considered as the Goldilocks among all other grinds there exist in coffee world.
Ditch the one scoop per cup advice. We want precision! At least, that’s what the golden ratio is all about. A good starting point for this ratio is to measure out 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of water and adjust according to your taste.
Forget about tap water! Minerals in it will affect the taste of coffee. Instead, use bottled or filtered water to let the natural flavors of those delightful beans shine.
You should not skip a pre-brew or bloom function if your coffee maker has one. Through this step, the coffee grounds are soaked thus enabling an even extraction of flavor. Think of it to gently awaken your coffee before brewing.
Also give some love to your coffee maker by cleaning it regularly following manufacturer’s directions on how to clean it. Mineral buildup can make your machine produce bitter tasting coffees so have a well-maintained shiny machine.
Preheat your carafe with hot water before you begin to brew to keep your coffee piping for a longer period.
Once brewing is finished, remove the carafe immediately to avoid the dreaded taste of burnt coffee.
Feel free and enjoy experimenting with different grinds, ratios of water and types of coffee. It’s all part of the adventure!
Prepare yourself to have your mind blown by this great piece which will be delicious for both you and your buds. Cheers, it’s time for a perfect cup!
