Both dogs and cats are born carnivorous. However, there are situations where we observe dogs or cats eating plants. Now the question is, “Why do dogs and cats eat plants?”

Let’s dive into the discussion –

Instinctual Behavior:

Sometimes, due to their instinctual behavior inherited from their ancestors, they consume plants or parts of plants. This consumption of plants can result from survival instinct.

Curiosity:

Both dogs and cats have curiosity like no other. So, they explore their surroundings, smelling and tasting the plants. The smell, texture, and taste of plants push them to consume these plants.

Nutritional Deficiency:

Sometimes, they may eat plants to supplement their diet with essential nutrients that may be lacking in their regular food. This behavior is more common in cats that primarily consume commercial diets, as they may instinctively seek out additional sources of nutrients.

Gastrointestinal Upset:

They may eat plants as self-medication for stomach pain or vomiting. These help cats regulate the function of their bodies properly.

Attention-Seeking:

In certain scenarios, they may eat plants to seek attention from their owners. If a cat or dog notices that chewing on plants draws a reaction or response from their owners, they may continue the behavior as a means of getting attention.

Social Learning:

Both cats and dogs may learn to eat plants by observing other animals, including other cats or dogs, or even humans, engaging in similar behavior. This social learning can reinforce and perpetuate the habit of plant consumption.

So, you must not get confused about the consumption of plants by your pet dog or cat. Instead, focus on identifying the toxic plants around you so that your pet doesn’t get into trouble.
